Dumplings are simply incomplete without their dipping sauce. This easy dumpling sauce recipe is the best supporting character to the plump, juicy dumpling we all know and love.

A good dumpling sauce must be savory, salty, sweet, spicy, and tangy all in one dip. This dumpling dipping sauce can be made with a few Asian pantry staple ingredients and can be made in under 5 minutes!

The best part about this soy garlic sauce recipe, you can customize it based on your preferences! Want an extra kick? Add more chili oil or chili flakes. Like a sweeter finish? Go ahead and add more sugar. This recipe pairs perfectly with my pork and cabbage dumplings or turkey dumplings.

    🍽 Kitchen Equipment

This easy dumpling sauce only needs 2 types of kitchen equipment that you most likely have at home.

    • Mixing bowl: you will need a medium-sized mixing bowl to mix all the ingredients together.

    🛒 Ingredients

You can find all the ingredients for this recipe for dumpling dipping sauce online or at your local Asian grocery store.

    • Soy Sauce: Use a light flavored soy sauce to prevent the dumplings from being overly salty. I like to use Kikkoman Organic soy sauce since it has a delicious flavor and a good balance of saltiness.
    • Chinkiang Vinegar: is a rice-based Chinese vinegar used as a staple in most Chinese dishes. It tastes fruity yet less sweet than balsamic, with a touch of umami richness. You can buy Chinkiang Vinegar online or at your local Asian grocery store.
    • Toasted Sesame Oil: toasted sesame oil brings a nutty aromatic flavor to the dumpling. A little goes a long way. You can buy toasted sesame oil online or at your local Asian grocery store.
    • Garlic: adds an aromatic flavor to this easy dumpling sauce.
    • Green onion: adds additional aromatic to the dumpling dipping sauce.
    • Brown Sugar: brown sugar adds a sweet element that balances the saltiness of the soy sauce.
    • Chili Oil: this adds a little kick to the dumpling dipping sauce as well as rich aromatic flavors. You use store-bought or make your own homemade chili oil or garlic chili oil.
    • Toasted sesame seeds: for additional nutty flavor and crunch.
All the ingredients for a dumpling dipping sauce prepared and labeled on a counter.

    ✨ Substitutions and Additions

I’ve listed some suggested substitutions and additions to customize your own easy potsticker sauce.

    Substitutions

    • Tamari: if you want to use a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce, you can use tamari or liquid aminos instead of soy sauce.
    • Rice Vinegar: if you cannot find Chinese black vinegar, you can alternatively use rice vinegar instead
    • Honey: instead of sugar, you can alternatively use honey or agave as the sweetener.

    Additions

    • Korean Red Pepper Flakes: for an even spicer potsticker sauce, you can add Korean red pepper flakes.
    • Ponzu: for a more citrus umami flavor, you can add a dash of ponzu.
    • Ginger: for a more aromatic flavor, you can also add grated ginger.

📝 How to Make Dumpling Sauce
