How to make Taiyaki (Easy Japanese  Fish  Dessert)

These warm light and crispy fish-shaped cakes can be made with your favorite fillings including nutella, red bean, custard, and more!

The batter for these Japanese pastries uses basic pantry staples you might already have.  This recipe requires a classic Taiyaki pan for making these on a stove. See the link below for my favorite taiyaki pan.

Sift the Dry Ingredients

Sift together the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl.

Mix the Wet Ingredients

Mix together the wet ingredients in a seperate bowl.

Combine All Ingredients

Combine the wet and dry ingredients. Cover and let rest for an hour.

Prep the Taiyaki Pan

Preheat and lightly grease the taiyaki pan over medium-low heat.

Add the Batter

Fill the fish about 60% up without filling in the tail.

Add Filling

Add filling and top with batter.

Cook the Taiyaki

Cook for about 2-3 on each side, or until evenly golden brown.

Cool and Trim Taiyaki

Transfer to a cooling rack before trimming off any excess batter from the fish shape.
